Fire On The Bayou
The Cajun Voodoo Musical

National award winning playwright Mark Leonard and published composer Tom Masinter have  completed their fourth musical, Fire On The Bayou, which had its world premiere directed by Allan Ross in a main stage production at San Antonio College in April, 1998. Fire On The Bayou, a mix of humor and the supernatural takes place in the swamps outside New Orleans in a Cajun town. A con man establishes a sinister cult and Marie Laveau the voodoo queen is called out of retirement to save the community. A cast of 4 men, 5 women and chorus was supported  by a supported by a 7 piece orchestra score which includes parts for fiddle and accordion.

The show drew national attention and at the time 18 theaters, two agents and two Broadway producers were interested in the script and music. A studio cast CD recording of local San Antonio theater stars accompanied by the composer at the piano has gone through three pressings and has received great reviews for both performance and recording quality.

World Premiere

San Antonio College is excited as is all of San Antonio! FIRE ON THE BAYOU brought the flavor of Louisiana to town. The colorful characters of Totu the Cajun, Eduardo the New Orleans con man and Marie Laveau the voodoo queen lit up the stage last Spring. Allan Ross  not only directed but also designed the awesome set for FIRE. A 16' tall cypress tree was at center stage overlooking the Cajun swain Robert as he poled his pirogue down the bayou.  Suzanne Moore, Music Director and San Antonio College Music Department staff member was excited to have such an excellent student and community cast. Jenny Ney of the San Antonio School for the Performing Arts who created such a stir with her work at the 1997 ATAC Globe Awards Show was the Choreographer.

In The News!

"Fire on the Bayou has a lot going for it. It brings a flavor of musical presentation and story-telling that is rather exotic to New York, and that's a big  plus!"

Clifford Lee Johnson III
Director, Musical Theater Program
Manhattan Theatre Club

"The important thing in the show was the music, which was extremely well orchestrated and created by Mr. Masinter. "Fais do do," "Fire On The Bayou," and "Love Is You" are very memorable songs that have potential to become musical hits. In a sea of revivals, it is refreshing to hear something that is new and innovative."

Mark Richter
Recorder-Times

"San Antonio theater goers are in for a rare treat..."

Kristina Paledes
San Antonio Express-News

"... the music is an impressive mix of ballads, waltzes and lively folk-based material. There is "Fais-do-do", a hypnotic ceremonial piece, ("Houdin!") grounded by insistent drum beats, and Eduardo's "Downtown Paris, France", which brings to mind the slimy insinuations of Sportin' Life in "Porgy and Bess."

Diane Windeler
San Antonio Express-News

"I especially like the fact that the story is told through a variety ofsongs with substance; it isn't just pretty music."

Allan Ross
Director
