Should I have my piano restored?

Older pianos often...

  1. Have a superior tone and engineering
  2. Were assembled by craftsmen
  3. Have more elegant wood work
  4. Hold their value better. Sometimes you can buy a reconditioned piano, use it for 10 years and sell it for more than you paid for it.
  5. Were built using naturally seasoned wood and do not have particle board and plastic parts found in many new pianos.
  6. Have sentimental value and are a connection to history and art.

New pianos are....

  1. Often built in the orient with the cheapest possible labor.
  2. Mostly mass-produced quickly in assembly lines just like motorcycles.
  3. Use artificially-seasoned wood and plywood.
  4. Lose their value quickly. One step out of the music store and the piano is often worth only half of what was paid.
  5. Often of lower quality. They won't get better with age; they just wear out.

If your piano is a family heirloom or a high quality piano that you are never going to sell you should consider having it restored by Thomas Masinter. Partial and complete restorations are available.

If you are going to buy a piano, a good rule of thumb is to buy a good old piano, rather than a new cheap one.

Testimonial

Tom,

Thank you and Bert for completing such a wonderful restoration of our 103 year-old Steinway piano. You were right on when you wrote about how great it looks, sounds, and plays. It's great to have it back in our home and to hear our son practice on it as he prepares for Ms. hall's fall recital. I'm pleased the weekend is here so I can spend some time playing it also.

Again, Tom, many thanks for a job well done. I'll be recommending you to friends who need piano restoration work done, that's for sure.
